Accommodation of prompt alpha-particle loss in a compact stellarator power plant
نویسندگان
چکیده
Alpha loss is an important issue in stellarators, where the inherent non-axisymmetry of the magnetic geometry causes an appreciable magnetic field ripple along the flux surfaces inside the plasma. This results in a non-negligible fraction of alphaparticles being promptly lost from the plasma and hitting the plasma facing components (PFC) at energies close to their born value of 3.5 MeV. The PFC armor must not only accommodate the heat load from the alpha-particle flux but it must also accommodate the He implantation resulting from the high-energy alpha fluxes while providing the required lifetime. An effort is underway as part of the ARIES-CS study to characterize the alpha-particle loss for a compact stellarator and to explore engineering solutions to accommodate the impact of these alphas on the PFC’s. This paper summarizes the initial results from this effort. 2007 Published by Elsevier B.V. PACS: 28.52; 52.55.H; 52.40.H; 66.30

ESTIMATION OF RADIATION LOSS FROM STELLARATORS USING NEOCLASSICAL TRANSPORT THEORY
The radiation power loss from a magnetically confined plasma in a stellarator has been calculated using neoclassical particle and energy fluxes in an energy balance equation. We could obtain a power loss of about 34% of the total input power by numerical calculation. This fraction of the power loss has been found to be in good agreement with the experimentally measured values of 30-40% for...

متن کاملCompact Stellarator Power Plants – Prospects, Technical Issue, and R&D Directions
Results of a detailed and integrated study of compact stellarator configurations as fusion power plant, ARIES-CS, are reported in this paper. The first major goal of the ARIES-CS research was to investigate whether stellarator power plants can be made to be similar in size to advanced tokamak variants. We focused our analysis on quasi-axisymmetric (QAS) configurations as they are able to operat...
متن کاملThe ARIES-CS – A Compact Stellarator Power Plant
Stellarators have many desirable features as fusion power plants. A detailed and integrated study of compact stellarator configurations as power plants, ARIES-CS, was initiated recently. Configurations with A ≤ 6 and excellent quasi-axisymmetry (QA) in both 2 and 3 field period versions were developed while reducing α-particle losses to < 10%. Stability to linear ideal MHD modes was attained bu...
